Mission
The Bible faculty is committed through teaching, research, service, and student character formation to provide community leaders through the church, who will teach integrity and values that will produce innovative, loving, and self-reliant individuals.
Objectives
- To provide ministers the leadership ability for helping Christian churches throughout Eastern Africa.
- To prepare ministers with the ability to study God's Word at a level that will prepare them to preach and teach.
- To oversee the development of ministers to be able to carry on the work of the church through internships and direct involvement in their practical skills and abilities.
- To inspire students to serve their communities through their churches to help build Godly morals and values in their society.
Outcomes
- A graduate should be able to translate theoretical principles learned into practical solutions to help people better understand who God is and what He has done.
- A graduate should have developed interpersonal skills as a result of interacting with fellow students in their discussion groups.
- A graduate should have developed good research, presentation and proper communication skills that inspire people to grow in Christ.
- A graduate should be able to manage various aspects of starting, growing, and maturing a fellowship of believers into a strong community church.
Character
- A graduate should be morally upright with a high level of integrity in their daily lives.
- A graduate should be self-motivated because of their experience as students of LIU.
- A graduate should have goals and posses the zeal to achieve those goals.
Knowledge
- A graduate should have gained a good understanding and ability to transfer the knowledge attained in their study area into the day-to-day issues they face at their work places.
- A graduate should be able to think critically, analyze ideas thoroughly, and communicate clearly and concisely.
Program Requirements for student Research
Students are to present their research work to their major professor when it's completed
Program internship/Practical experience
Field work is to be a course unit on its own and graded independently. This work should be completed before the fourth year of study.
Course Descriptions for Bachelor of Christian Ministry
Introduction to Christian Ministry
This course introduces the student to the ministry of the local church. It includes the spiritual preparation of the leader and how that applies to the spiritual growth of the church. Different aspects of ministry will be examined such as weddings, funerals, baptisms, service projects, and planning special events.
Introduction to Christian Education
An introduction to the field of Christian Education, this course places emphasis on the Biblical and historical foundations, philosophy, programs, materials, organization, and administration of Christian Education within the local church. . The student will gain an understanding of the educational mandate given by the church by developing biblical sound educational philosophy, integrating theology, and learning how to make practical application to help people grow in their knowledge of God.
Christian Worship
This course will emphasize biblical models of worship, which will help students evaluate the current worship practices of today's church. Time will be spent examining creative and unique methods that work to support the central theme of a worship service and create services that make an irresistible impact. Students will study a variety of worship services from local churches and get experience by leading a worship service. A biblical foundation of worship from the Old and New Testaments will help students lay God-centered and Scripture-shaped foundations in worship.
Introduction to World Missions
This basic course introduces students to those issues which are vital for understanding and carrying out Christ's global mission for His Church, including Biblical, theological and historical foundations; political and cultural considerations for world evangelism; mission strategies and resources; and the roles of supporting congregations and agencies.
Introduction to Preaching
An introduction to preaching, this course includes the preparation and delivery of sermons, both theory and classroom practice. Students will also deliver messages in a local church.
Greek I
A study of the New Testament Greek grammar with drills in composition that will lead to some reading from the Scriptures. Vocabulary, sentence structure, and basic interpretation will be stressed.
Church Management and Finance
A study of financial and management principles that help develop skills in leading a church. Time will be used for personal budgeting, saving, spending, and preparing for the future.
Greek II
This Greek study reviews syntax and develops further mastery of the language by reading from the Koine Greek New Testament. New Testament exegesis is the goal of this class.
Church History
This course traces the development of Christianity from Pentecost to the present. It will give special attention to important leaders, institutions, and theological issues. Emphasis will be given to what has happened in Africa.
Expository Preaching
Studying the uses and advantages of the expository sermon, this course includes preparation and delivery. Particular attention will be given to scripture analysis, and homiletical tools for creating a sermon. Greek is required along with preaching in a local church.
Restoration Principles for Africa
A study of the origin and principles of the nineteenth-century reformation in America and its continuing influence into the twenty-first century around the world. Application to the African context will be vital.
Romans
An exegetical and theological survey of Paul's letter to the Christians in Rome (with attention to the epistle's themes of justification, righteousness, and the grace of God). The professor may choose to exegete selected portions more intensely rather than surveying the entire book.
Pastoral Counseling
Designed to acquaint students with some practical help in the ministry of counseling, this course includes various types of counseling situations such as depression, suicide, stress, death and dying, marital problems, doubt, anxiety, guilt, confession, crises, the divorced, bereavement, the hospitalized, and self-esteem.
Old Testament Theology
A study of the major theological concepts of the Old Testament writings from the perspective of the ancient settings and with the use of biblical theological language. The close relationship between the Old and New Testaments also is stressed.
Theology Research Paper
This project should show the students ability to search out information by using the skills they have learned in research. The student will show their ability to write clearly, analyze complex ideas, and communicate effectively, their thoughts to people through writing. This project will also help them to prepare to teach their chosen subject to others and help them understand how they can help people grow in their knowledge of God.
Church Planting and Nurturing
An examination of the effects of people movements, social structures, homogenous units, resistant and receptive peoples, church health, and other concepts on the growth the Church. Procedures involved in making church growth studies are given consideration. The importance of church planting will be stressed throughout.
New Testament Theology:
A study of the faith affirmations of the New Testament, with special reference to the redeeming grace of God, the person and work of Christ, the new life in Christ, full salvation, the nature of the Church, and the Christian hope.
Revelation – End Times
An exegetical and theological survey of the book of Revelation (with attention to apocalyptic literature and the structure of the book). The professor may choose to exegete selected portions more intensely rather than surveying every part.
The Mission of God
In a rapidly changing world, a growingly confused church is searching for a stable foundation for life and ministry. The Missio Dei is the answer they are searching for. How do we unify the social and the evangelistic aspects of scripture in a more holistic way is discussed in the study of the Missio Dei. How can we read the bible with new eyes, the eyes of God's missional intention for the world that God loves.
Internship
Provide opportunity for ministry experiences under the supervision of a mentor. This is the time to take what was learned in the classroom and get supervision in working with people in life situations. The student should be exposed to as many aspects of ministry as possible in the given time frame.
